Healthy Habits That Make Your Summer Even Better
By Genevieve Cunningham
Summer is most definitely a fun time of year. Kids are out of school. Vacations are planned. Let the good times roll. Unfortunately, a lot of people let the good times roll just a little too hard during the summer, and as a result, their health takes a nosedive. But what if we could do both? What if we could have old-fashioned summer fun and still boost our health? It's totally possible! If you really want to keep your health intact this summer, take a look at these healthy habits that can keep you moving in the right direction for better mental and physical health all year long.
Pick Up a Book
Summer is a great time to pick up a book and catch up on some reading. Reading is good for the mind -- it keeps our memory and cognitive abilities sharp. It can also bring emotional wellness into our lives. Reading can be relaxing -- especially if you're a fan of fiction -- or it can be a chance to learn something new -- especially if you're a fan of nonfiction. It works well in a morning routine (if you have time!), or it can work well at lunch or bedtime to help you wind down. If you want a really simple way to improve overall health, it may really be as simple as doing a little reading.
Simplify Your Exercise
You should absolutely still exercise through the summer. We need the movement and activity. We need to maintain the habit. But in all of the heat and the extra fun, it's OK to simplify. Instead of striving for a faster mile, maybe you can go on a hike. Instead of an intense interval routine, maybe you can grab a bike and go for a ride. Simplifying your exercise routine is good for body and mind, and still helps you maintain your workout through the season.
Consider a New Hobby
The summer often leaves us with a little extra time on our hands. And with a little extra time, why not pick up a new hobby? Hobbies engage both the mind and the hands. They can teach us something new and keep us busy. Maybe you can learn to play a new instrument, knit, do puzzles, or something else. Consider staying busy, as doing so will enhance your mental and physical health more than you know.
Summer is a time to have fun! But along with the good times, it's also a time to focus on bettering your health. Use these tips to enhance your health in little ways this summer, so that you can enjoy better overall health for the rest of the year.
