Don't Fear the Carbs

By Sara Butler

When it comes to nutrition news, carbohydrates tend to get a bad rap. They've been vilified as the cause of heart disease, weight gain, and other health issues. While it is true that refined carbohydrates are not good for you and can cause health issues, not all carbohydrates are refined carbohydrates. In fact, carbohydrates are central to your health and wellness. If you eat the right kind of carbs, that is. Here are a few reasons why you don't have to fear carbs!

Carbohydrates Don't Cause Weight Gain Alone

Most people try to avoid carbohydrates because they think it'll lead to unhealthy body weight. The truth is that refined carbohydrates can lead to excess calorie intake that can then lead to weight gain. Refined carbohydrates are things such as sugar. Things such as baked goods have little to no fiber or protein but are high in refined carbohydrates.

The quality of the carbohydrates you eat is more important than the number of carbohydrates, which is important to remember when you make food choices. Try to focus on foods such as vegetables, whole grains, and fruits, which contain the right kind of carbs.

Your Ancestors Ate Carbohydrates

Your caveman ancestors may have had diets rich in protein, but when they learned how to cook, carbohydrates became a big source of nutrition. There's evidence that early humans ate legumes, grains, and root vegetables they cooked over the fire. Because the cells in your body run on glucose (a fancy word for a carbohydrate sugar), you need at least 20 percent of your energy from carbs to help your brain function as it should -- thanks to your ancestors!

You Need Fiber to Be Healthy

Fiber is a carbohydrate your body needs it to be healthy. In fact, soluble fiber has benefits to your heart health and helps you to maintain healthy body weight. You can find this type of fiber in foods such as fruit, oats, and legumes. It takes a while to digest, which helps you feel fuller for longer. You simply can't avoid carbohydrates or you miss out on important nutrients such as fiber that help you to stay healthy.

If you have questions or concerns about carbohydrates in your diet, then you should talk to the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic. They are great resources to help you understand how to achieve optimal health.
