Tips for Longevity in Your LIfe
By Sara Butler
Health and longevity are two topics that are on people's minds -- especially as they get older. The simple fact is that a large percentage of the population is getting old and because of that people are as interested as ever in ways they can live long and avoid diseases and degenerative conditions along the way. No matter your age, it's important to understand the simple things you can do to help improve your chances of living a long and healthy life. Here are a few tips you can use to help you get started.
Eat Right
You've heard this one before but that's because it's so important! What you put into your body has a huge impact on your health and how long you live. If you spend your days munching on cheeseburgers and deep fried Oreos, chances are it's going to have a major impact on the quality of life and how long you live it.
If you want to live longer and live better, then it's time to take a hard look at what you eat. You should avoid prepackaged and processed foods when possible, along with refined carbohydrates such as white flour and sugar. Just say not to sugary sodas and even bottled juices since they're both high in added sugars. Pay attention to serving sizes and try to eat out less, then ensure you're drinking plenty of water each day. These things will put you on the long road to a healthy and long life.
Exercise
Again, a tip you've likely heard before simply because it's so important! Your diet will only take you so far, you must also move your body to keep it strong and flexible as you age. You should be getting at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, which can be something as simple as walking or riding your bike. Stretch and find a balance between how much time you spend sitting each day and how much time you spend moving your body, whether it's for structured exercise or not. Sitting too much can literally kill you.
A Few Other Good Points
If you want to age well then you also need to do a few other things. Make sure to keep your social connections strong throughout your life. Also find a way to effectively deal with stress and find ways to challenge your mind and keep building connections in your brain. Take care of your teeth and if you smoke, then quit. Above all else, enjoy your life! There's no sense in striving to live longer and healthier if you're not having fun in the process!
