Healthy And Economical Go Together Well

By Tom Herrin

It seems like a lot of times that when people look for things that are healthy and economical, the two are not very compatible.  Most people expect to pay more when they have the opportunity to buy things that are healthy.  It may appear that the demand part of the supply and demand rule is overshadowed by those items that promote or encourage good health.  That old standard does not always have to be the case.  When striving to improve the quality of the foods they eat, people have some really good options.  One of those is choosing to purchase and eat those foods that are in season.

There May Be Better Flavor

When foods, particularly fruits,  are allowed to ripen naturally, they tend to have more flavor.  They are often sweeter and have more nutrients.  This is part of the process of allowing the sun to do its job to complete the growth and development of the given food.  Unfortunately, in today’s world, the demand drives producers to pick foods early and allow them to ripen in shipping.  This deprives the food of having that opportunity to reach is fullest potential.

Using Foods In Season Can Save Money

When people are able to purchase foods that are in season, they can have a significant savings due to the availability of those foods at the market.  When this is combined with the fact that foods in season may have a better supply of nutrients, the end result can be more nutritious and flavorful food at lower prices.  That is a great double whammy.  Having more than enough of any food available can help to enhance available supplies in the kitchen and encourage family members to be willing try more foods.

It Can Encourage More Home-Cooked Meals

When people have an abundant supply of good food, they may find themselves looking for more ways to prepare those foods.  This can lead to more family interaction in planning and preparing.  It has been long known that preparing and eating meals as a family is a key in producing stronger family ties.  Family members will begin to look forward to those meals and the family conversation that goes along with them.  It can recapture something that is often lost in our hurried world of fast foods and hectic schedules.  With such increased opportunities to share, many people will find that trust among family members tends to increase.  This is always great for those with children.  Try seeking out those foods of the season.  It may pay off in more ways than meet the eye.
