A Successful Workout Is More Than Just Exercise

By Tom Herrin

When people begin workout programs, they often spend great efforts to get physically prepared.  This is a critical part of beginning a successful program.  There are times, however, when they fall short in the category of planning how they should dress.  It may sound simple enough, but dressing properly for the different kinds of circumstances they may encounter can play a major role in the level of success they manage to achieve.  A bad experience with poor dress can dampen their enthusiasm for their total program.  Some careful planning can help to curb this problem.

Warm Weather Dress May Seem Elementary

Sometimes people feel like they overstate the obvious.  When they consider how they should dress for working out in warm weather, it seems rather simple.  They want to be able to perform the activity while remaining cool enough.  In order to stay cool, lightweight fabric is available today that can wick away moisture.  Fortunately for most people, it is available at low cost at just about any store that carries workout clothes.  Anytime drying can take place as people work out, an increased cooling rate can help them to avoid becoming too heated.

Cold Weather Dress Can Be An Addition

Any workout may be accomplished by wearing lightweight clothes.  For cold weather, additional layers of clothes should be added as needed.  Outer layers should be insulating.  This can allow people to warm up properly, then remove layers as they progress in their workout.  This allows them to control their body temperatures more effectively.  Care should be taken to see that outer layers are not too bulky, but several types of clothing are available that can do this job well.

Rain or Wind Pose Different Challenges

When rain is expected, it is best to remain reasonably close to a safe shelter.    Working out in stormy weather or heavy rain should be avoided.  Light rain is not as big a problem and may be dealt with much easier.  Lightweight rain gear can be found that will not interfere with a workout.  Wind has a different effect.  Strong wind can prevent people from moving well.  They must avoid material that will produce a parachute effect.  Cold wind will require some kind of material that breaks the wind, which can penetrate many kinds of clothing and cause serious problems with too much cooling.  In order to complete the total workout, it is important to know about the weather conditions.  It may be the last piece necessary in planning for success.
