Leafy Greens May Be in a Class By Themselves

By Tom Herrin

Some foods are pretty cut and dried.  A lot of people simply divide them up into basic groups.  Meat, vegetables, fruits, and grains are sometimes considered to be the basics of all foods.  People then apportion what they have at meals according to this.  Proteins, carbs, and fats are all important, but there may be more to it than that.  Identifying what they are trying to accomplish can be a big step in creating good, healthy meals.  Having something that tastes good is a pretty big deal as well.  Leafy greens can play a good part in a meal, and they are easy to prepare and plenty healthy.

They May Support Digestion

Digestive problems are something that many people have and simply take for granted.  It may be due to the fact that they have developed eating habits that have not been good for digestion, and they have gradually become accustomed to the issues without realizing they are actually not the norm.  Leafy greens can provide nutrients that may help prevent such problems.  They also restore some of the energy that may have been lost since they have had the problems.

They May Help With Cholesterol

Eating as many people do today can be bad for the circulatory system.  This may be largely attributed to the fact that they consume lots of fast foods.  These foods tend to be poorer quality with high fats.  To make matters worse, many of them are prepared with bad oils.  Leafy greens can help to supply the nutrients that may help to remove some of the materials that can create blockages in the blood vessels.  Eaten on a regular basis, they may help to keep those blood vessels clear.

They May Be an Effective Food Food for Weight Management

Many of us have difficulties managing our weight.  Some of this may be because we fail to take into account the changes our bodies make.  Our metabolism may slow down, but we may continue to eat as if it had not.  At least, this has been one of my problems in the past.  Age can do a number on the way our bodies work and we may not recognize it.  Adding leafy greens to the diet may help us to feel fuller due the bulk.  They have quite a bit of nutrition, we may feel more satisfied and less hungry.  Whatever the case, they can be a help as we try to build a healthier diet.
