Awake at 3 AM? Your Chiropractor Can Help
By Sandy Schroeder
If your sleep is becoming an ongoing nightmare, it’s time to solve the problem.
See your chiropractor to deal with the specifics. The licensed chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic are well equipped to help you. When you come in, your chiropractor will explain how improved spinal health may create better overall health, including restful sleep.
The spine contains the intricate nervous system that controls much of what we do. When it works, so do we.
A spinal adjustment uses a gentle targeted movement of the spinal column and extremities to improve communication throughout the body. Individuals may feel pain relief, and a fresh sense of well-being with better sleep, vitality and alertness
Wellness is unique to the individual. As you assess the results of your adjustment, you may be inspired to pursue more sleep improvements. Harvard Health suggests these tips.
Work on Stress – Consider what may be keeping you up nights to resolve the problems. Look for solutions for family, financial, or personal issues. Just working on the problems will help ease your mind.
Establish Regular Hours – Start going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, including weekends. Avoid taking naps during the daytime.
Create a Sleep Haven – Eliminate electronics as you create a serene mood with soft music and colors. Use drapes to block out light, upgrade mattress and pillows, and add a fan, or air filter, to purify the air and generate a soothing white noise.
Get Outside to Get Moving – Use doctor approved walking, swimming or jogging daily to release tension, and make the most of being outdoors.
Cut Off Caffeine Early – By early afternoon, cut out tea, coffee, sodas or chocolate. Caffeine stays in the system to easily disturb sleep.
Lighten Up and Laugh – Sometimes we can get into a spin, worrying about not sleeping, as we become more and more anxious. Call up a friend who makes you laugh, or watch your favorite funny movie. Laughter relaxes the body, and helps us regain perspective.
Avoid Lying Awake in Bed – If you are awake during the night, get up, have a glass of milk and read a book until you are sleepy again (don't read a tablet, laptop or your phone).
If your sleep problems continue, see your doctor to get a referral to see a sleep specialist.
