How to Keep Your Brain Running Strong

By Sandy Schroeder

Most of us make the effort to keep our bodies healthy, but we also need to keep the brain healthy. So where do we start?

WellAndGood.com talked to Dr. Ajeet Sodhi, a neurologist at the California Institute of Neurology, and he shared the things that he does to keep his brain healthy. Here are some of his tips

Keep your brain busy - Even though your brain works all day on the job, it also needs to read, do crossword puzzles and reach out to all sorts of people to share ideas. One of the most aware people that I have known was also the most curious. He continually questioned everything around him and was one of the most alert people that I have ever known.

Make sure each day has purpose - Think about the people that you know who regularly help others. Most of them are full of energy and quick to laugh. They have learned how much giving to others does for them. Look around you to spot friends, neighbors, friends and people in the community who could use your help. Studies show volunteers who make the effort to help others also enjoy significantly better mental and physical health.

Fuel the brain with healthy food - Choose omega-3 rich salmon and mackerel along with fresh juice, eggs and yogurt. Add whole grains and nuts and dark leafy green vegetables like kale and spinach. Complete the diet with cranberries, blueberries and tomatoes to fight inflammation.

Shed some sweat every day - Run, bike walk, or jog for 30 minutes every day to stimulate the brain and the spirit. Just one good session can provide a boost for the whole day. Swimming or dancing work too. Pick the ones you enjoy and get out there.

Keep the beverages coming - Dr. Sodhi advises us to stay hydrated and add a cup of coffee or two. He says research suggests some of the compounds in coffee may work to impact Alzheimer's or Parkinson's diseases. Meanwhile a steady flow of water keeps all of the cells functioning for better concentration and coordination.

Help your brain rest - Consider using breathing exercises or morning and evening meditation to let go of stress. Once you establish a rhythm you may be amazed at how much clearer your thoughts become when you calm down. Whatever helps you relax will go a long way to help your brain run better.

When you work to keep your brain strong you may feel the difference right away. Enjoy!
