Don't Just Drink to Good Health, Work for It!

By Donna Kostiew

We ask for it in our daily prayers, we hope for it with every new doctor visit we make, and we toast to it every time we clink our wine glasses together. It’s something we all need, want and desire. It’s good health. So many people believe and often will say, “If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.”

That’s why staying on top of your health and being proactive with a healthy lifestyle is so very important. You need to know what you are eating, how you are moving, and if you are getting the quality of sleep that your body requires.

Being Proactive With Nutrition

A healthy diet doesn't need to be super complicated in order to get results; you just need a little bit of common sense. Be sure to choose a variety of foods, and if you still get stuck on that, just make sure your plate is full of color. Lean proteins with plenty of veggies, colorful fruits for desserts instead of processed sweets … really, anything that has grown or lived outdoors is a great rule to follow on what to eat. Avoid, or reduce, the number of sugary sodas and drinks you have. Drink water. Then drink some more.

Being Proactive with Exercise

Your body wants to move, so let it! Are you participating in some form of exercise during your week, or is the only action you are making that of moving from a desk job to your couch every day? Don’t deny your body what it was designed to do. Go to the gym, join an exercise class, take a walk after work, or just take an extra flight of stairs every morning … just do something!

Being Proactive with Sleep

Everyone knows the importance of sleep, so why do so many people feel as if they can short-change it? A good night’s sleep is crucial for the health of your body and is truly just as important as having great nutrition and exercising well. Make sure that you are establishing good sleeping habits: limit caffeinated and alcoholic drinks during the evening, eat lightly before bed, remove all electronics from your bedroom, and make sleep your priority with a cool, dark, and quiet room. Keep a consistent schedule that offers eight to ten hours of sleep each night, as well.

It's time to be proactive and to take control of your health. By becoming an active participant in the choices that need to be made every day, you will start to change the way you feel and will greatly improve the health of your body.
