Happy Commercials Don't Guarantee Good Health

By Donna Stark

Creative marketing definitely has its pros and cons, doesn’t it? For example, a clever, well-made commercial may get you to try something new that you grow to love or to book a once-in-a-lifetime vacation that your family speaks about for years later. Or, it can do the opposite and convince you to purchase something that you really don’t need, something that is a waste of your money or time. Marketing is everywhere, but have you ever stopped to notice how many times you are bombarded by food marketing each and every day, and have you given any thought to how it influences your food choices?

Happy Commercials Don’t Guarantee Happiness

One of the main reasons that many people are unhappy with their weight is because of what they consume, and a lot of what they consume has been brought to their attention from all of the ads they see throughout the day. Television commercials, websites, billboards, social media posts are all major influencers. They promise cheap, convenient, and tasty options that will not only cure your hunger but will also leave you grinning from ear to ear. But you’re not grinning anymore, are you? Food choices have never been more complex than what they are now, but with some new habits, you can break through that complexity and gain some control. Here’s how.

  • Take marketing for what it is - And what it is, is a way to get your money. That’s their job, but your job is to make sure you don’t fall into that trap. Remember, they don’t need to consider if the chips or cookies they are promoting are good for you … you do.
  • Avoid eating out - Extensive menu options and large entrees have done a number on millions of people. Try to eat in more than you eat out. You will have far more control over what you are consuming and can focus on making healthier choices. If you do eat out, look up the menu online before you go. Becoming familiar with the options can help you choose wisely once there.
  • Choose healthy - Healthy eating is simple. A healthy meal contains lean protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains, and does not contain refined sugar, fried or fatty foods, processed food, and anything that glows (I’m kind of kidding with that one, but not really. Have you seen some of the colors out there?)

Stick to Routines

It’s easier to maintain control over what you eat if you stick to a routine. So make a healthy breakfast, pack your lunch, and eat in for dinner. Healthy eating is a huge factor to achieving your ideal weight and improving your overall health and wellness, so block out the flurry of ads you see and focus on what’s good!
