Keep Your Knees in the Running with Some Quick Steps

Build some muscle – In your regular workouts, make sure you are strengthening the muscles to stabilize knee joints to absorb all of the stress that is constantly placed on the knees. Physical therapists tell us to start with the quadriceps and hamstrings and include hip, leg and core muscles. They recommend stepping exercises and squats that don’t go too low to build the strength knees need.

Work on range of motion – To outsmart any encroaching stiffness, work on straightening the knee. Try sitting on a mat, putting a pillow under the ankle and using leg muscles to gently move the knee down.

Do a weight check – Get started losing extra pounds to relieve pressure on your knees and all of your other joints. Added weight increases pressure on the knees by four times. If you lose 20 pounds you will subtract 80 pounds of pressure from your knees. Discuss your weight with your doctor and shoot for a BMI, body mass index, of 18.5 to 24.9.

Spots to watch – In your daily travels avoid standing for long periods on hard surfaces or prolonged squatting. Use a low stool to garden and wear cushioned shoes to reduce the impact of hard floors. Trade aerobics or jogging for low-impact biking or elliptical trainers.
