Are Carbohydrates Really That Bad?

By Amy Silva

Carbohydrates, or carbs, often get a bad rap. Are all carbs "bad"? The short answer is no, but consuming whole grain foods or vegetables are a better option than choosing candy, for example. The longer version will depend on a person's dietary needs and the specific diet they're following. Some diets don't restrict carbohydrate intake at all, and the dieter is only to stay within a certain calorie intake each day. Other diets, like low carb diets, work by limiting the intake of carbs as much as possible, even those considered by many to be healthy choices.

What Are Carbs?

The body needs to be given macronutrients, or macros, because it does not make them on its own. Carbohydrates, protein, and fats are macronutrients. Carbs can be found in many types of food such as grains, beans, milk, sugar, fruits and vegetables. They provide energy for the body and some are packed with nutrients the body needs, which is an added benefit. There are two classifications of carbs; complex and simple. Here's a quick look at the difference:

  • Simple - Examples of simple carbohydrates include sugary foods like soda, fruit, honey, dairy, and candy that are absorbed by the body faster than complex carbs. Simple carbs aren't necessary in any type of diet, as they don't provide essential nutrients the body needs, nor do they contain fiber. Simple carbs may provide energy but it's because they cause a spike in blood sugar leading to a crash later.
  • Complex - Complex carbohydrates are digested at a slower rate than simple carbs and the rise in blood sugar is more gradual than that of simple carbs. This may give the impression they don't provide energy, but it's because it's spread out over a longer period, which is healthier, rather than giving a burst of energy like sugary foods. Examples of complex carbohydrates are whole grain pasta and bread, fruit and starchy veggies like potatoes.

Benefits of Carbs

It's thought that carbs aid in serotonin production, which can boost mood. One study shows eating a healthy amount of carbs may lessen symptoms of anxiety and depression and another study shows they can help memory. Certain carbohydrates can even aid in lowering cholesterol. "Good carbs," like whole grains, contain fiber to aid in digestion. Pasta and white rice do not have fiber, or the nutrients other options have.

Dietary needs vary from person to person and there isn't one type of diet that is right for everyone. Consider your health goals and do some research to make a plan that's right for you.
