When Stress Hits, Strike Back

By Sandy Schroeder

We all know we are under stress, but sometimes we fail to take action to reduce stress as we add birthdays or see a senior in our family coping with it.

Changing situations, family worries, or financial pressure can make every day an uphill climb. If you can relate, you may need some new ways to find solutions and some better ways to let go of the tension.

For seniors, loss of a loved one, mobility, or issues with vision, hearing and balance can add stress to every day. Physical symptoms such as a weakened immune system, mental health issues, or high blood pressure can add to the problem.

If you see stress in your family, it may be time to reach out to your doctor for additional resources.  Your doctor and health care center can offer a team of specialists to help you and your loved ones reduce stress providing family counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists.

Then Support the Effort

At the same time, you can create daily boosts to fight stress. as you find more ways to make each day a little better.

Eat healthy - Start with high protein breakfasts and add fresh fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy and lean meats, fish and poultry along with pickles, sauerkraut and leafy greens.

Get outdoors everyday - Make the time to walk, run, bike or hike and stay activity indoors. Add a bike or treadmill to the family room, along with exercise mats and small weights.

Sleep better - Create soothing sleep rituals with soft music, warm showers and simple snacks. Go to bed at the same time every night and try to eliminate as many daily problems as possible.  Move the electronics out of your bedroom and avoid spicy foods or alcohol right before bedtime.

Add new outlets - Use music, art, crafts or cooking to improve your day and let go of tension.  Learn to play an instrument or take a class in photography or watercolors.

Reach out to friends and family - Spend some time with trusted listeners as you talk through your problems. Just knowing you have support can help you relax and gain a better perspective.

Stress will always be there but you can gain the upper hand with a little concentrated effort.
