What You May Not Know About Chiropractic

By Sara Butler

Chiropractors don’t spend a lot of time in the limelight. You can turn on the television and see a number of shows with other types of doctors, but you rarely see chiropractors portrayed. Needless to say, many people aren't as familiar with chiropractors, or chiropractic care, as they should be. Thanks, "Grey's Anatomy." In an effort to change all of that, here are a few things you may not know about chiropractic!

It’s For Everyone

There is no age limit to those who can benefit from chiropractic care. It’s for people of all ages and from all walks of life. For seniors, it can help to restore range of motion and increase balance and coordination. In children, it can help reduce symptoms associated with allergies, asthma, and colic in young babies. It can even help with bedwetting issues in older children! So don’t be embarrassed to explore chiropractic care no matter your age – there’s something in it for everyone!

You Don’t Have to Go Forever

There’s a misconception that once you start chiropractic care, you have to keep going forever. Truthfully, after symptoms have been addressed and relief found, you only need to have occasional checkups – just as with any other doctor! Of course, it's recommended you see the chiropractor regularly in order to fully reap the benefits of regular maintenance visits, but it’s not a requirement in order to benefit from the chiropractor.

Chiropractic Adjustments Aren’t Painful

The hands-on adjustments offered by chiropractors can be a little intimidating if you’re not sure what to expect, especially because of the popping noises so many people associate with adjustments. Adjustments are gentle, but may be firm. If you do hear popping sounds, that’s simply the gases being released from the capsule surrounding the joint as space is created during an adjustment. Many people report the release of tension -- as the proper function is finally restored -- as a great feeling!

Chiropractors Know About More than Just the Spine

Many people think chiropractors only deal with the spine but that’s not the reality. Chiropractors are trained to screen for issues beyond the spine. They are also trained to offer advice and counseling on sports injuries, rehabilitation, nutrition, and exercise.
