Chiropractic Tips for Hospitality Workers

By Sara Butler

If you work in the hospitality industry, then there are special considerations you must take when it comes to your health and wellness. Hospitality requires long, odd hours and a lot of time on your feet. While fast-paced work environments may make time pass quickly for your shift, it’s also a work environment full of hazards to your health. Here are a few things hospitality workers should keep in mind in order to stay healthy and safe.

The Dangers

The manual tasks associated with hospitality are required to get your job done, but they can be the source of injuries in the workplace. If you don’t lift correctly it can cause problems. Combine that with repetitive tasks and you’ve got a recipe for the strain on your body that can lead to discomfort and pain. This is one of the reasons turnover is so high in the hospitality industry. Of course, your employer is tasked with keeping you safe at work, but it’s your responsibility to protect your spinal health by creating good habits.

Keep Your Spine Happy

There are a few things you can do to ensure you’re supporting good spinal and overall health. As a hospitality worker, chiropractors recommend you:

  • Take breaks – If you’re feeling fatigued and tired, then this can lead to poor form when performing tasks and can tank your productivity. Make sure to take breaks when you can and rest between tasks.
  • Stretch – Your flexibility is essential to staying healthy, so make sure to take time to stretch out a few times each day. This can help to offset the effects of prolonged standing and repetitive tasks.
  • Be active – While it may seem like the last thing you want to do before or after a shift, you should make sure exercise is a part of your routine. Of course, rest is important, but so is supporting good spine health and overall wellness through exercise.
  • Learn to lift – If you lift things at work, then learning to lift the right way is essential. Bend at the knees and never use your back to lift, only your legs and hips.
  • Be mindful – Try to think about your posture throughout your shift and correct yourself when needed.
