Dental Anxiety: Reasons You Need to Go Anyway

By Genevieve Cunningham

Considering the majority of Americans are behind on dental care, this may not be surprising, but dental anxiety is a real thing. There's something about visiting a dental clinic that strikes fear in the heart of children and adults alike. It's so prevalent that many completely avoid the dentist in an effort to avoid the feeling. Unfortunately, this is more serious than skipping a cleaning. We need dental care, we need it in a big way, and our lack of care is playing a significant role in overall health. If you suffer from dental fear, take a look at these reasons why you should go anyway, followed by some tips for conquering the anxiety.

Your Mouth and Your Health

Keeping your mouth clean is about way more than the appearance of your teeth. A mouth that is filled with bacteria is more likely to suffer from decay and disease. And disease in the mouth is heavily linked to an increased risk of heart disease, digestive problems, stroke, and blood clots. By keeping the mouth healthy, you're improving the health of your entire body.

Tips for Conquering the Fear

If you have dental anxiety, you know that the struggle is so very real. But with the right approach, you may be able to get yourself through the doors, which is often the hardest part.

  • Find a friendly dentist - Some dentists specialize in anxious patients. They have extra friendly staff, experience with anxiety, and steps in place to help everyone in the office deal with the fear and resistance.

  • Take a supportive friend - Friends offer love and support. If you're exceptionally anxious, take a friend who is not afraid. One who is confident in the dentist's chair. Having that moral support -- without any judgement at all -- can be a big help in getting you care.

  • Do it fast - The worst part of the process for an anxious patient is the wait. Find a clinic that can get you in quickly. The less time you have to think about it, the more likely you are to get it done.

It's really important to keep your mouth healthy. It's important for our physical well-being, but it's crucial for mental wellness too! We often neglect this aspect of our health, and it catches up to us later in life. Use these tips to battle anxiety, and get your mouth and your health in better condition starting today.
