3 Signs That Your Diet Isn't Working Anymore

By Genevieve Cunningham

Diet. This four letter word gets a lot of use and attention. While a diet can mean a restricted menu eaten with the intention of losing weight, the true meaning of diet is simply the food that you eat. Whether you eat all veggies and chicken or all candy and soda … that's your diet. If you’re interested in being healthy, it’s important to maintain a well balanced diet. But what happens when, no matter what you do, your body isn’t changing for the better? Take a look at these signs that your diet isn’t working, followed by some tips for getting it back on track.

Your Weight is Increasing

This is an obvious sign that something isn’t working with your current diet plan. If you’re suddenly gaining weight, there’s a good chance that you’re taking in too many calories. Pay attention to what you’re eating and how much. Compare this with what you’ve been eating in the past. Is it more? Less? Different foods? If your weight is creeping upward, take a quick timeout to reevaluate your diet and make some small adjustments.

You Feel Sluggish or Tired

When you don’t get the proper nutrients, your body will feel sluggish and rundown. While other factors can create this feeling as well, it’s not a bad idea to suspect your diet first. We often get behind in a particular nutrient without even realizing it. If your energy begins to lag, try writing down your foods every day for a week to determine whether you’re getting everything you need. It might also be a good idea to incorporate a good multivitamin at the start of every day.

You’re Starving

If your diet has been meeting your needs, and suddenly you find yourself starving all the time, it’s possible that you need to adjust your calories. Hunger shouldn’t be something that we feel on a constant basis. We should feel it around meal times, but not all day every day. If you notice this happening in your life, add just a hundred calories or so to your daily intake. With some very minor adjustments, you may be able to satisfy the hunger without gaining any additional weight.

Diet can be a tricky thing to dial in. Every person is so different, and each diet may need to be altered to fit each body specifically. But with a little trial and error and some patience, you may finally see your body and health changing for the better for a lifetime of better health and ultimate well-being.
