Mental Health Tips at Every Age

By Genevieve Cunningham

Mental health care is important no matter your age. It matters when you're young. It matters when you're old. It's something that we should pay attention to and take care of for our entire lives. But that doesn't mean that care looks the same at every age. Just as our physical health changes, our mental health changes as we get older as well. If you would like to keep those that you love as healthy as possible, take a look at these mental health tips that are specific to each age.

For Kids

We don't often think about children whenever we think about mental health, but children need to protect themselves as well. For kids, it's all about self-expression and involvement. Kids are always being told what to do. Give them a little bit of freedom when you can. Let them pick out their clothes or shoes. The more ownership that they are able to take for themselves, the less frustrated they're likely to be. It also helps to keep them involved. Take them on playdates, take them to the park, let them join a Little League team. Kids need friends and activity, and keeping them involved gets them both.

For Teens

Teens are the age group that we generally think of whenever we think about mental health. Perhaps that's because teenagers experience so much angst. They're learning and growing so rapidly, and they crave so much independence that they can't have just yet. For teens, you need to stay in communication. Ask them questions, let them answer, and don't judge what they have to say. Just as it helps with kids, it helps to keep teenagers involved as well. Encourage them to join a group at school or to get a part-time job. This gives them purpose and fills their time with something positive.

For Adults

Adults often think that they have everything under control, but that's simply not true. Adults need to protect their mental health as well. How can they do this? Sometimes adults forget to be involved. While there are less groups available, adults can engage their minds and bodies in a hobby. This keeps them learning and also challenges them on a regular basis. It also helps if adults have a little bit of fun. They're so busy working, providing, or doing the daily tasks of life that they forget to have some fun. Make sure that you're taking days off and using your vacation time to promote good health in your life.

No matter your age, taking care of your mental health is going to be an important step in your life. Use these tips to make sure that you're doing what you should. We change as we age, and it's important to change your habits with it. Use these tips, and keep yourself and your family in better health all year long.
