3 Ways to Build Body Strength
By Genevieve Cunningham
Body strength is an important aspect of health. When many hear those words put together -- body and strength -- they think of rippling muscles and protein-packed food. They think of actual bodybuilders. But body strength goes far beyond this typical image. Everyone needs strength in the body in order to thrive. And though we like to think that this kind of strength comes naturally, we actually have to work to build it. But the good news is that you don't have to be a bodybuilder to build strength … you just have to know where to start. If you're ready to add strength to your body and life, take a look at these tips.
Lifting Weights
The most obvious way to build strength is by lifting weights. Strength is the specific purpose of lifting, so this probably comes as no surprise. There are plenty of options for lifting. You can join a gym and use traditional free weights, opt for the slightly more alternative kettlebells, or buy some handheld weights to use in the comfort of your own home. What you choose will likely depend on your comfort level as well as your long-term goals. Find what works for you, make a plan, and build strength slowly over time.
With Balance Exercise
Most people underestimate the strength that it takes to balance. If you can build balance, you can most certainly build strength. Balance exercises can be done on the ground, on a bench, or on a yoga ball. Do an internet search for “strengthening balance” or “balance exercises.” This will give you some great ideas and examples of what you can try. At first, you may notice that your balance is rather shaky. But over time, you’ll get a lot more steady. Why? Because you’ll be building strength. This is a great strength building technique for anyone who wants to build natural strength that can truly help them with the ins and outs of everyday life.
Through Yoga
A lot of people think of yoga as a flexibility exercise, and though it can certainly help you become more limber, it also helps build strength. Yoga requires you to hold your body in various positions and gently move to other positions. It requires massive core strength, as well as arm and leg strength. When you first start yoga, start slowly. Because of its slower pace, many think it’s going to be easy, but it’s absolutely not. It’s tough, but it’s worth it. Check out your local gym for a class or to find a personal instructor. This is a really good way to enhance the overall health of the mind and body while building strength at the same time.
Strength is a necessary part of life. While we all have a bit of natural strength, building more is always a good idea. Use these tips to get your body stronger and more stable. With a plan, some practice, and some goals in mind, you can build a strong body to help you now and to carry you into the future.
