Sleep Deprivation: The Risks of Staying Up Late

By Genevieve Cunningham

It's rare to find someone who actually gets enough sleep. For the most part, we're all suffering. We toss and turn. We count sheep. We go to bed too late and wake up too early. We're walking around completely fatigued. Unfortunately, most of us see this as a way of life. It's so common that we actually believe it's normal. But sleep deprivation is neither normal nor healthy. In fact, it's incredibly dangerous. If you're not getting enough sleep in your daily life, take a look at these possible risks, plus a few tips to help you sleep a little better.

Lack of Focus

It's no secret that poor sleeping habits make it hard to pay attention. But in certain situations, this can actually be incredibly dangerous. You may not be able to pay attention while driving, which increases the risk of an accident. You may lose focus at work, which can put you in danger of making mistakes, some of which could actually endanger your job. A lack of focus happens -- but if it happens too much, you can be putting your health, job, relationships, and life in danger.

Higher Rates of Stress

When you're tired, you aren't able to handle stress effectively. If you don't get good sleep for days in a row, the normal stress that you feel builds. Before long, you'll be overwhelmed with stress and worry. When stress is too great, it can cause a wealth of ailments including: aches and pains, headaches, weight gain, and others. If you want to avoid as much stress as possible -- or at least deal with it appropriately -- make sure that solid sleep is a part of your plan.

Higher Risk of Health Ailments

A lack of sleep keeps the body from functioning at its best. As a result, sleep deprivation also leads to a heightened risk of major diseases. These include heart disease, diabetes, and even everyday illnesses. The dangers are real, and if you're not careful, your seemingly harmless habit of staying up late can take your entire health in the wrong direction.

Tips for Better Sleep

If you need help getting better sleep, there are some actions you take to improve your chances. Try any mixture of these tips: turn down the temperature, clean your sleeping space, exercise early stretch before bed, turn off all the lights, unwind with a routine, and avoid caffeine. Once you figure out what works for you, stick with it for better sleep and a massive improvement in health.

Skipping out on sleep is risky. Dangerous. Functioning without sleep is not an accomplishment. It's a terrible habit that's ruining your health. Improve your sleep with these habits and it's possible that you'll begin to feel better from the inside out before you know it.
