Computer Posture Solutions
By Emily Lindholm
Sitting at a computer all day has become the standard for most occupations. After all, we are living in the digital age. Yet, despite the number of hours most people are spending at a computer each day, little seems to be spoken about the ergonomics of desk posture.
We are not designed to function with our necks forward and shoulders slumped. Though slight curves in the back are natural, it is not natural to be hunched. If we're spending all day in this forward position, typing on a poorly positioned keyboard nonetheless, we are going to wind up with problems.
Luckily, there are many solutions to this issue so that we don't have to end up with pain in the neck and shoulders, "misalignment" of the spine, and wrist issues.
Rearrange Your Work Station
The first step is to rearrange your work station. Focus on ways that you can sit up straight. Do you need a different chair? Is your desk too high, too low? If you're using a laptop, be sure and get a separate keyboard to type on. Laptops are not designed for long-term use. The keyboard should be lower than the computer screen. One reason is to protect the wrists. The other reason is to protect the spine. Proper head and neck placement is crucial for the spine. Set yourself up so that you can sit up tall and look directly at the screen, neither up nor down. Use a desk that has a separate space for the keyboard to be placed below. Your wrists will be happier, and this can also help to prevent so much shoulder tension.
Exercise
The best way to maintain your posture is to exercise, stay fit, and strengthen your core. Your core muscles are going to help you sit up tall. Without them, proper posture is difficult to maintain. On the flip side, if your core is weak and you're slouching, this puts too much strain on the lower back.
Pilates and yoga are excellent ways to develop core strength. Any exercise is going to benefit, but these two modalities focus on alignment. They both complement other forms of fitness beautifully and will enhance any other practices.
