The One Thing You Really Need for Fitness Success
By Genevieve Cunningham
Success is the ultimate goal. No matter what you're working toward -- a work promotion, better health, or something personal -- we all want to find success. We want to feel accomplished and personally satisfied. Unfortunately, sometimes finding success feels incredibly difficult. Besides "work hard," we don't really know what else to do. And though working hard will definitely move you toward your goals, it's not always enough. It's too broad, the instructions too aimless. If you're ready to find success, especially in the world of health and wellness, take a look at what you really need to find success.
Why It's Not Motivation
It's easy to think that the only thing you need is motivation. After all, if you can just get moving in the first place, everything else will fall into place, right? While it's true that motivation can be a great asset to getting started, it's not all you need to make progress. It will definitely get you started, but can it keep you moving forward? What happens when the motivation wanes? What happens when you just really don't feel like working out today or when that birthday cake is calling your name? In these moments -- and these moments will definitely happen -- you'll need more than motivation. While you should definitely find reasons to be motivated, it should only be one part of the overall healthy living equation.
The Deal With Discipline
So what do you need to accompany motivation? Perhaps the most important piece of the puzzle is discipline. When we have self-discipline, we can wake up early in the morning to work out. We can say no to the treat. We can keep going even when we don't have the motivation. Discipline is the true difference between those who succeed and those who stay in the same place. So how do you develop self-discipline? Practice! You have to practice the habit over and over and over again. You have to keep the mind strong and centered. You have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages. Once you develop a good habit of self-discipline, you'll be well on your way to getting in the best health of your life.
Motivation is a key factor in getting moving toward better health. It's the jumping off point. It's the moment you decide to make change. But to make it work -- to really make it last -- you need to be disciplined. Is it easy? Not at all. But if you take the time to create self-discipline, you can improve your health and your life in more ways than ever before.
