How to Make Your Workout Work for You

By Genevieve Cunningham

The thought of working out can bring a lot of complicated emotions to the table. For some people, working out is life. They love everything about it, from the sweat to the soreness to the mental challenge. But for the majority, working out comes with a bit more hesitation. Though we know it's necessary, we often don't want to do it. This desire to skip the workout and watch TV instead is why it's so important to make the most of your exercise routines. If we're seeing results, sticking with it becomes so much easier. But how do we do this? If you want to make your workout work for you, take a look at these tips to start using in your exercise routine today.

Lift Weights

When we lift weights, especially if the weights are heavy, we tear our muscles. Sounds bad, right? But it's not. These little tears are tiny, and they don't really do any damage. Our muscles actually grow by repairing these little tears -- which is done during the rest periods. If you want your workout to work for you, lift heavy and then rest. While you're resting, your body will be hard at work doing repair and growing in strength and muscle size.

Slow and Steady

While a quick, intense workout can help make changes to your body, slow and steady can also bring big benefits. You don't have to cram your workout into a tiny little window. It's OK to go slow and enjoy the process. How does this work for you? It makes it more fun, which means you'll stick with it. And consistency is the most important part of a successful exercise routine. If you want it to work for you, you have to stick with it. Keep it slow, steady, and enjoyable, and your workout will absolutely work toward your own better health and wellness in the long run.

Sticking with exercise is really important -- and sometimes really hard! But if our workouts are actually working and we're seeing results, consistency becomes easier. We find that we actually want to workout. We can ignore the sweat and the soreness and the mental challenge because these frustrating parts become worth it. Use these two simple tips to make your workout work for you and your body and health. With a well thought-out plan and long-term consistency, you'll improve your health and wellness and feel better than ever in no time at all.
