3 Really Simple Ways to Feel Happier Every Day

By Genevieve Cunningham

Everyone wants to feel happy. We like that feeling of love and security and self-fulfillment. We like to feel good in our own skin. It's unlikely to find someone walking around who actually wants to feel depressed or sad. But sometimes it seems as though that feeling of happiness is so far away. We just can't grasp it. Luckily, this feeling can be a temporary condition. If you're interested in improving your mental health and feeling a little happier every day, take a look at these really easy tips to add to your life today.

Get Outside

The outdoors is a powerful place. Research has proven time and again that getting outside can boost and stabilize moods. Why? Because of the fresh air and sunshine. Because of the natural elements that surround us. When we soak in the sun through our skin, we're giving our bodies some much needed Vitamin D, which is essential for mental wellness. When we breathe fresh air, we're giving our bodies the oxygen it needs to thrive. Even if you don't understand how this might work, give it a try. Chances are good that you'll begin to feel better almost immediately, and that the feeling will compound with every day that passes.

Do Yourself a Service

We get so used to doing without. We buy for others. We spend time on spouses or co-workers or children. And what happens to us? We put ourselves on the back-burner. If you really want to feel healthier every day, put yourself first at least one time per day. Buy the expensive coffee. Take the break at work. Splurge on a lunch all alone. Doing something that is solely for yourself reminds you that you are also important, and this can raise your self-worth and overall sense of contentment in life.

Engage Your Brain

Happy people are busy. They're not so busy that they can't breathe, but they're definitely engaged in life. If you want to be happy, you have to engage yourself in something. If you can, choose a hobby to fully immerse yourself in on a daily basis. Work on a car, paint a picture, do yard work. This challenges the brain, lowers stress, and gives you an outlet for your everyday frustrations. If you're not taking any time for yourself, this is a great place to begin.

Feeling happy is a choice. Sure, some people have serious mental health conditions that prevent that feeling of contentment. If this is you, get some help! But if you just need a little help feeling satisfied with yourself and your life, give these tips a try. You may find that with some very simple changes to your normal routine, you feel happier and more at peace than ever before.
