Easy Substitutes You Can Make for Better Health
By Brandi Goodman
Sometimes the things we want aren't the things that are best for us. Each choice you make can have major consequences on your health. Eating nothing but sugar, for example, is going to increase weight, impact sleep, and raise your risk for disease. Choosing more nutritional food options is the better course of action. You don't have to start making drastic changes to your diet, but you can make some easy substitutes that will help to better your well-being.
Buy Brown Rice Instead of White Rice
White rice is a common staple in many households. You can use it as a side dish for a meal or concoct a full meal from it with some added ingredients. White rice is processed. It also has a higher glycemic index that can raise your blood sugar levels quickly. Though it's fine to enjoy on occasion, the better option would be to choose brown rice. There are more antioxidants and a higher fiber content in brown rice.
Choose Low-Fat Dairy Products Instead of Whole Fat
Milk, cheese, and yogurt are commonly enjoyed dairy products. Many store options are high in fat. Enjoy them more freely by selecting low-fat options. Skip the whole milk and choose a fat-free or 1 percent option instead, for example.
Use Ground Turkey Instead of Ground Beef
Lots of common meal options call for ground beef. Spaghetti, tacos, burgers, and meatloaf all use beef to make. This doesn't have to be the case. You can substitute ground turkey in your recipes instead to cut back on some fat and calories. Turkey is a much leaner meat option that doesn't have as much sodium as red meats. It's a heart-healthy alternative.
Park Your Car Farther Away Instead of Parking Up Front
Nutrition isn't all you should worry about. The activities you do make a difference in your health as well. You may find yourself looking for the closer parking space when you're out running errands. This doesn't give you much walking distance. Start opting for parking spots that are farther away so you have the opportunity to get some extra exercise. Taking the stairs rather than the elevator will also have a similar effect.
Start with some simple substitutions and watch how your health improves. Over time, it will become easier to make these selections and your health and well-being will soon be at the forefront of all your decisions.
