4 Tips for a More Worthwhile Walk

By Brandi Goodman

Walking is always a valid option when you're looking to improve your well-being. However, you need to keep some tips in mind to make your walk more worthwhile. Heading out in a pair of high heels or flats, for example, will have your feet and legs aching quickly. Make your outing beneficial for your body with some advice in mind.

Walk on Several Types of Terrain

A walk in your own neighborhood can be great for your health, but it may not be as challenging as you need. Walking on several types of terrain will ensure you're really building up your lower body strength and stamina. Walk up a hill and back down. Walk on some sandy spots or in the grass before getting back on the pavement. It can help your body become accustomed to different types of activities so you're always balanced and well-prepared.

Wear the Right Pair of Shoes

The right pair of shoes makes a big difference in how far you can walk. High heels will hurt very quickly. Not to mention, they completely throw your body off balance and will not provide an adequate workout. Flats, nor bulky boots, will suffice either. You need athletic shoes that are comfortable with plenty of traction to keep you steady on your feet.

Stay Hydrated

You should never head out without a water bottle in hand. Walking is exercise, after all. You need to stay hydrated while you're on the move so your joints can stay limber and handle the activity. Make sure you're sipping when you need it and taking breaks as well for a longer swig when necessary.

Plan Your Walking Space for the Weather

If it's raining or rather dreary outside, you may not be as inclined to walk. You don't have to be outdoors, though, to have a worthwhile experience. You should plan out your walking space based on the weather. This may mean finding an indoor track, or even walking around the mall for a while, in order to get your exercise in for the day.

Not every walk is as good as it could be for your health. Walking in heels for a few minutes does not provide nearly the same effect on your well-being as a brisk walk around the block in athletic shoes. Make sure you're walking with purpose so you can really boost your lower body strength and heart health.
