Why You Need Some Down Time to Improve Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

When most people think about improving their health, they think about changing their diet or beginning a new exercise program. They think about a lot of sweat, hard work, and depriving themselves of sweets and desserts. But what about one of the easiest parts of good health -- rest? While eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly is definitely important, getting enough downtime is important, too. If you’re not getting enough rest and relaxation in your life, take a look at these reasons to add it into your regular schedule.

It Helps With Mental Health

If you’re constantly on the go, constantly plugged in, constantly working … your mental health is definitely going to suffer. We aren’t meant to spend all of our waking hours working or worrying. We’re meant to enjoy a bit of life. Ensuring that we get some personal downtime is basically ensuring that we get a little bit of enjoyment. If you’re feeling stifled mentally, get in some relaxation, and you’re likely to notice a big and positive difference in your overall mental state.

It’s Necessary for Stress Relief

Stress is an inescapable part of life. But we can’t feel stress all of the time and expect not to feel any consequences. When we’re stressed for long periods of time, our physical health may take a nosedive. We may get sick more often, experience heart problems, or have high blood pressure. Regular downtime helps alleviate some of the stress on a regular basis, thus keeping some of these problems under control or at bay.

It Might Boost Your Energy

If you want to have energy, you have to get some rest. If you’re never getting any time to rest and rejuvenate, you’re likely going to feel excessively fatigued. And in the world we live in, this is the last thing we need! If you’ve noticed exhaustion creeping up in your life, schedule some downtime and you’ll probably see an increase in your energy levels every day.

Getting healthy definitely takes some hard work. But getting enough rest is also important … and it’s the easy part of good health, too! Make sure that a little R&R is happening regularly in your life. With enough downtime, you can boost your physical and mental health now as well as long into the future.
