3 Ways to Improve Mental Health Before School Starts

By Genevieve Cunningham

Summer is a time when we stop thinking about various things. School? Forget about it! Fall or winter activities? Let's worry about that later! Health? What’s there to worry about? The truth is that even though summer is a great time to kick back and relax, real life is just around the corner. And if you're a student or have a student in your home, it's time to refocus on mental wellness. We want to start the new school year off in a healthy state, right? Of course! To get your mental health in shape before school is back, take a look at these tips.

Take a Vacation (or Day Off) Alone

Before you get back into the thick of the school year and you are suddenly surrounded by people all day every day, it's important to take time for yourself. Take a vacation or day trip just for you. Go where you want to go and do what you want to do. If you can’t meet your criteria perfectly, be creative. Can’t afford a trip to Bali? Spend a day at a nearby beach or check out a local water park. It doesn't really matter where you go as long as you give yourself a chance to unwind and just be.

Set Some Healthy Habits

Summer seems to be a time when we get way off schedule. When school rolls back around, a poor schedule will only contribute to stress. Instead of allowing that to happen, start setting your healthy habits now. Wake up at the same time every day and go to bed on time. Get used to eating on a schedule. This gives your body and mind plenty of time to adjust, which then lowers stress and protects mental health later.

Get Caught Up

Don't go into a new school year already behind. Use the next few weeks to get caught up on as many things as possible. Catch up at work. Catch up on summer reading or assignments. Feeling behind is a sure way to heighten stress and establish poor mental health from the beginning. Get caught up now and avoid these problems altogether.

Now is the best time to get your mental health under control. Use these tips to get prepared before school is back in session. With a little forethought, you may be able to boost mental health now and protect it in the future for a healthy new school year.
