Walk Your Way to Better Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
There are a lot of ways to improve your health. You can radically transform your diet. You can pick up running as a hobby. You can hire a personal trainer and work out like never before. But if you'd like to take an approach that isn't quite so harsh, you can also start walking. Walking is really good for the body -- better than most people realize. If you would like to take this simple approach to boosting your health, take a look at these reasons why you should start walking today.
Why Walking is Good
So what makes walking so great? A few of the benefits include:
It burns calories - No matter how quickly or slowly you walk, you'll be burning calories. If you need to burn calories -- and we all do! -- then beginning a walking routine is a great idea.
It works the muscles - When we walk, we engage our muscles. The lower body gets the best workout, but it also requires the use of our abs and our arms. Over time your muscles will both strength and definition.
It boosts your mood - Walking, or really any exercise at all, is good for mental health. If you find that you're moodier than you would like to be, walking might help. Regular walking, especially if done outside, can boost your mood and make you feel more positive on a daily basis.
How to Make It Challenging
If you've been walking for a while, you may be ready to take it up a notch. To make your walking routine a greater challenge, take a look at these tips:
Go uphill - Walking uphill requires more muscle work and will burn more calories. You may find that you get out of breath more easily and your legs burn more quickly. If you want a simple way to intensify your walk, going uphill is a good choice.
Get in the water - Water creates resistance. If you need a challenge but without strain on your body, consider walking in the water. The water will create both a greater challenge as well as a bit of relief from pain and discomfort. You only need about three to four feet of water for this to be effective. Find a nearby pool and walk to your heart's content.
Pick up the pace - Sometimes all you really have to do is go faster. You don't have to run or even jog, but simply walking faster will give you a greater challenge. This works well since you don't need any extra equipment to get the job done.
Walking is so great for your body. If you don't walk much, it's time to change this habit in your life. Don't be afraid to take a few extra steps. Don't be afraid to walk with purpose! With a walking habit, a little determination, and some patience, you can change your health for the better and start feeling your best in no time at all.
