Getting the Most from Chiropractic Care
By Debra Rodzinak
Becoming and remaining healthy is ultimately what every patient wants. Regular visits to a chiropractor is an important beginning step when overcoming pain or injury. However, adding certain steps to your regular chiropractic visits will increase your overall success.
Consistency
Chiropractic treatments are not a “one and done” magic trick, just as there is no magic pill that doctors give patients for illnesses, treating chronic pain, or curing diseases. Chiropractors work with patients to gently align the spine to allow the nervous system to function properly. Since damage to the spine often takes years to occur, being consistent with chiropractic treatments allows chiropractors to help the body heal itself.
Posture
Sitting at a desk all day is terrible for spinal health. If you are tied to your desk, remember the “90/90 Rule” which states to keep elbows and knees bent at a 90-degree angle. Sitting up straight and placing the feet directly below the knees helps the spine to stay properly aligned. The adjustments performed by a chiropractor will not be as effective if a person continues to slouch or have poor posture. Therefore, working on beginning and maintaining proper posture is helpful in obtaining overall spinal health.
Water
Drink water all day long. Most people are not properly hydrated and this keeps the body from working to its maximum capacity. Try to drink at least (8) 8-ounce glasses of water to begin; work up to drinking at least half of your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, a 200-pound person should drink 100 ounces of water daily.
When the joints of the body have the proper amount of synovial fluid, they work better and can bend and twist without injury. Not only will drinking the proper amount of water help the body function as intended, but it may help you shed a few pounds of extra weight.
Eating Healthy
Giving the body the proper nutrients through healthy food allows the body to function as intended. To maintain health and wellness, a proper diet should be part of your overall lifestyle.
Exercise
Exercise not only burns calories, but it keeps the body flexible, strong, and healthy. If you are recovering from injury, discuss exercise options with your chiropractor.
