Relief from Spinal Muscle Spasms with Chiropractic

By Debra Rodzinak

The spine is a complex series of bones, discs, and nerves that are in control of the movement of the entire body.  The vast number of muscles that control motion is attached to the spine that travels from the neck to the pelvis.  Back pain is a common reason that patients visit a doctor.

Trauma to the Spine

Anyone who has ever been involved in any type of automobile accident has probably felt the pain or discomfort a day or two later in their muscles.  When a muscle is jarred violently, it can become torn, strained, or stretched too far.  When this happens, inflammation usually follows and can lead to painful muscle spasms.

Sports injuries in wrestling, football, weightlifting, golf or any other sport that involved quick and sudden movements can result in torn, stretched, or strained muscles.  Back spasms are thought to be the body’s attempt to help to steady a region where injury has occurred.  Therefore, muscle spasms are not in the area of injury, but rather in the muscles that are in close proximity to the injured area.

Posture and Spasms

Trauma is not the only reason that a person suffers from muscle spasms in the back.  Poor posture can cause weakened muscles to suddenly seize up and become tight or short.  When this happens the muscles on the opposite side overcompensate.  Stress on these muscles can cause overexertion and lead to injury which ultimately leads to a muscle spasm.

Joint Dysfunction

If the joints of the spine are not working properly, the soft tissues that surround these joints can become overstressed.  Limited motion or poor alignment can cause these muscles to become injured in a similar way to those who suffer from poor posture.

Leg Muscles and Back Spasms

If the muscles in the legs become tight and inflexible, the lower back can tighten up and spasm.  The abdominal and gluteal muscles will become weak and affect the lumbar or lower spine.  This weakness and tightness combination will ultimately lead to a tug-of-war on the spine which leads to a muscle spasm.
