Pink Himalayan Salt: Should You Try It?
By Genevieve Cunningham
It seems as though we’re always discovering some new health food to add to our diets. In the past few years, it’s been all about the pink salt. Pink salt, also called Himalayan salt, is now a staple in most grocery stores, and many people rave about its flavor and healthy benefits. But is it all it’s cracked up to be? Or is it more hype than health? Take a look at the basics of pink salt to determine whether it needs a spot in your cabinet.
What Is It?
Himalayan salt is a salt that comes from a region in Pakistan. This region is said to be one of the richest salt mines in the world. Its pink color comes from the incredibly rich mineral content, with traces of 84 different minerals being found in its makeup. Calcium, magnesium, copper, and zinc are just a few of the essential nutrients that this salt boasts. It’s also called Himalayan rock salt, pink salt, and Himalayan sea salt. In recent years, it has found a place in the kitchens of the western world, becoming quite a popular food in the health world.
What are the Differences Between Pink Salt and Table Salt?
Proponents of pink salt claim that it is more pure than regular table salt. It is said to still be mined by hand, as opposed to the industrialized process happening with table salt in the states. With its heavy mineral load, many claim that it’s more balanced and packs a more powerful punch for our health as well. And the taste? The taste is similar, but some claim that pink salt is stronger in its flavor yet more natural as well, making it one of the best choices for flavoring food.
What are the Benefits of Trying It?
Pink salt is said to bring a few healthy benefits to the table … literally! Some of the healthy side effects that are claimed by this natural product might include: balancing the body’s pH levels, aiding in digestion, boosting the respiratory system, purifying both the body and air around you, and enabling more efficient function of the body. These benefits are often slight, but present enough for people to notice and lay claim to their presence.
Should you try Himalayan salt? Why not? It tastes good, brings some benefits to your life, and is easily substituted for what you’re accustomed to. Find it at any grocery store or online. Expect to pay just a little more than regular salt, but it won’t break the bank. Overall, this is a health food that is worth the trouble, so add a little pink to your diet and enjoy.
