3 Safe Practices for the Best Workout

By Genevieve Cunningham

Working out is essential. It's essential for a healthy body weight, strong muscles, good balance, and longevity. If we take our time and find an activity that we enjoy, this essential task can be quite enjoyable. Of course, that enjoyment only lasts if we can protect ourselves from injury. Hurting yourself during your workout is one of the worst feelings! Luckily, protecting yourself is easier than it seems. If you want to workout in a safe and effective manner, take a look at these three practices to keep in your workout routine every time you get moving.

Stretch Before You Begin

You should absolutely not skip stretching. The stretch is when your muscles get warm. It's when you awaken your flexibility and get them ready to be used. Stretching before a workout helps prepare your body and goes a long way in preventing injury. If you're not currently stretching before you begin your exercise, start today! It's one of the most important parts of a safe and effective workout routine.

Always Have Water Near

Dehydration is dangerous. It can cause muscles cramps, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and a whole host of other symptoms. And when you're working out and sweating and getting hot, dehydration is a real risk. To keep yourself safe, make sure you always have water nearby -- and make sure you drink! Taking little sips throughout your workout can help you stay hydrated, safe, and healthy through the entirety of your routine.

Listen to Your Body

Our bodies are constantly talking to us. They don't say actual words, but they reveal so much in the way that they feel and behave. Learn to listen to your body by getting to know your normal. Do you usually have a headache after a workout? If not, pay attention when you do. Are your muscles usually sore at completion? If not, try to figure out why they are this time. Listening to our bodies goes a really long way. Start practicing this skill now, and you can keep your body safe and healthy in the future.

A good workout is a safe workout. It's a workout that challenges you, but that doesn't push you too hard. And even for a newbie, it's entirely possible to keep yourself safe during your workout. Use these tips to make a plan, and protect your body through your workouts starting now.
