The Importance of Support During Struggles

By Brandi Goodman

Struggling alone with your mental health can feel isolating and scary. It is far better to have people you can lean on for support so you don't feel so alone in the world. Even with people surrounding you, your thoughts can still lead you down a path of despair when those people don't actually understand what you're going through. It's extremely important for find the right kind of support when you're struggling.

Loved Ones

Your loved ones are the first ones you should turn to in a time of need. They may not fully understand what you're experiencing if they haven't gone through it themselves, but they can let you know that you're not alone and you have people you can count on. They can listen to you and tell you they're there for you always.

Support Groups

Support groups are one of the best resources you can have. They are chock-full of other people who have gone through the same or similar experiences to you. They have a true understanding of what it is that you're feeling and are there to help offer support and guidance. Knowing how they've coped with mental health conditions and negative thoughts and feelings can help you find ways to cope yourself. There are local support group options that may meet at a certain time each week, or you can find online support groups, even on Facebook and other social media platforms, to get the help you need.

Hotlines

A number of crisis hotlines are available for you to call when you're truly desperate. If talking to your friends and family or reaching out to online support doesn't help, then call a hotline instead. Take down several numbers so you have them when needed. Don't just write the number down, either. Put it in your phone also so you have it on you at all times. When you're truly feeling down and need to reach out, calling a hotline and speaking with someone who has vast knowledge of how to help and support you in this time is a must.

It is important to focus on your mental health. Whenever you're feeling down and could use a friend or perhaps just a listening ear, it's beneficial to reach out to someone. Your loved ones may provide a shoulder, but support groups and hotlines are other tools you should have in your arsenal to fight your struggles alongside others who understand.
