How to Put the Bounce Back In Your Resilience

By Sandy Schroeder

How are you fixed for resilience? Some mornings I am OK. Nothing bothers me. Other days I am really looking for ways to hang in there. If you can relate, the Mayo Clinic offers some good ways to turn misfortune around and avoid losses.

Resilience can make all of the difference when you lose a loved one or face an illness or financial loss. With it you can pull your skills together and work your way through it. Without resilience you may become a victim and simply feel overwhelmed.

Resilience is not a magic wand, but it can give you the awareness to look beyond and find enjoyment in life again without all of the stress.

How to Keep Functioning

Here are some ways to bounce back.

Stay connected - Value the friends and family that you have and keep reaching out for more connections. When trouble strikes, you will have a place to go to talk, get help, and brainstorm ideas.

Work on your daily routines - Maintain a healthy schedule with good foods and regular exercise that makes each day worthwhile. When trouble strikes, the strong routine that you have built will help you keep your balance and move ahead.

Keep a winner list - Don't forget all of those times when you rallied and won. When  you run into a particularly strong challenge, you might use some of the same tactics to handle the new one.

Inject a little humor - When tension builds and demands just keep coming, humor may come to your rescue. Sharing a simple joke or a quick laugh can help everyone relax a little and find ways to relate.

Treat yourself better - When problems multiply, it's easy to forget to exercise, eat right or just enjoy a good book. Make the time for yoga, meditation, deep breathing or prayer. Get outside every day and reach out to friends to go to lunch, have coffee or catch a movie. As you feel better, your troubles may seem less overwhelming, more manageable.

Always look ahead - Once you master a situation, remember what happened and look ahead to avoid similar challenges. Assess  your future on a regular basis and start making plans to have adequate resources and solid backups when needed.

Get professional advice - Sometimes the right answer just won't come. If you are not making progress, look for a mental health counselor who can help you evaluate the problem and find the right resources.

Never give up hope - Just when you least expect it, things can change, a situation can sort itself out, or a new strategy may make everything a lot better. Stay flexible and keep watching for opportunities.
