Holiday Weight Gain: 3 Tips to Help Avoid It
By Virginia Laird
With the holiday planning in full swing, it is necessary to begin preparing for beating the weight gain that can accompany the delicious foods you are certain to see this season. As tempting as it may be to taste every delightful dish that makes an appearance on each party buffet, it is not the healthiest choice. Personal trainers, dietitians, and healthcare professionals have all prepared lists of tips to help those who struggle with self control when it comes to holiday foods and weight gain. Some of these tips include:
- The tablespoon rule can keep you on track
- Get on the scale routinely
- Lean and green meals are the best
The Tablespoon Rule Can Keep You on Track
I had never been introduced to the rule of the tablespoon until a dear friend of mine signed up with a weight loss group to help her reach her weight goals. While being indoctrinated in the meal plan, she was taught the rule of the tablespoon. It is simple and wise. Weight loss specialists teach their clients to enlist the rule of the tablespoon at times when the goodies are far too tempting to maintain a strict diet, including during holidays. When attending holiday parties and gatherings where the glorious food can be too tempting, allow yourself one (and only one) tablespoon full of each treat (or dish) you desire to try. This helps to keep portions small, while tasting every guilty pleasure available.
Get on the Scale Routinely
Personal trainers suggest it is wise to step on the scale routinely to help keep your weight in check. While your weight can vary a pound or two based on how hydrated you are, it is still a great tool to help you make healthy decisions when it comes to what you eat. During the holiday season, subtle reminders can help you choose to avoid some of the great goodies that will cross your path.
Lean and Green are the Best Meals
Although you will certainly veer away from your strict healthy eating habits, it is best to choose lean and green as often as possible. Sticking (relatively) close to a healthy eating plan can help curb your cravings for all things sweet, which can help avoid packing on the holiday pounds.
Adding just a couple of these tips to your routine can help you prevent unnecessary holiday weight gain. Have fun and enjoy your next holiday party knowing you are in charge of your waistline this season. May you and your family have the best holiday season ever!
