Adding Extra Years to Your Life

By Stephen R. Farris

Want to live longer? Chances are you can, but only if you start making some healthier lifestyle changes. For the most part, a lot of us have not followed the guidelines of eating right and getting regular exercise. Not to mention some of the other poor habits we may have picked up at different times of our lives, like smoking and excessive drinking. We may still be doing this, and if so, we continually shorten our lifespan.

Not all of us have been on that path. There are many who have stayed tried and true to being active and living healthy, those people haven't smoked (or used tobacco products), drink moderately, exercise at least 30 minutes per day, kept their weight in check and eat healthy.

By doing so, it simply puts them ahead of the curve. However, for the rest of us, it's still not too late to salvage a few extra years to our lifespan.

The Key Lies in Diet

According to researchers, diet is at least one of the keys towards a longer life. Foods high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats are those types we should avoid in order to keep our cholesterol levels normal, our blood pressure lower and our heart functioning properly. Not to mention avoiding the inner tube we sometimes carry around our midsections. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats are essential for us to get the nutrition and minerals our bodies need.

Smoking and Alcohol

For one thing, cutting out smoking not only reduces your risk for heart disease, but it also reduces your risk of developing lung cancer. Drinking alcohol in moderate amounts, such as a glass of wine per day or occasionally, can also reduce your risk of heart disease and risk of liver disease or additional health ailments. It can be difficult to kick the habit(s), especially if you've done it for a long period of time. But it can be done. If you do smoke or drink alcohol, and are looking to quit, talk with your doctor or chiropractor to find out more. They may be able to give you a few tips and suggestions to guide you on the path of a healthier and more active lifestyle change.
