You may be making a big effort to eat healthy, but still slowing your metabolism down with some crucial mistakes that you could easily change. If you are frustrated with extra pounds and always feel hungry, it may be time to streamline your metabolism.

According to WellandGood.com, metabolism issues may link to heart disease, chronic inflammation, diabetes, many cancers, autoimmune disorders and Alzheimer’s. However, lifestyle and diet changes can make a difference. Watch for these three key mistakes.

You May Not Be Eating Enough Healthy Fat

Balancing protein and carbs with healthy fats may be the smartest way to keep your metabolism humming. Think in terms of great breakfasts, lunches and dinners with these key foods that help to maintain healthy metabolism levels.

Don’t Fill Up on Processed Food

Researchers say processed foods hike insulin levels, and insulin is the major hormone that controls metabolism. When you eat something processed that is loaded with sugar, blood sugar levels go way up and crash down around your ankles later. When insulin levels are elevated, the body responds by storing more fat and locking it away so it is harder to burn it off. Skip the whole process by avoiding processed foods as much as possible, and loading your cart with fresh or frozen fruits and veggies along with lean poultry, fish and meats. 

Don’t Wait Until You Are Starving to Eat

Hunger is a sign your body needs calories. If you wait too long, the brain slips into a starve mode and insulin levels shoot up while the calorie burning process slows way down. Never run on empty. Keep healthy snacks on hand to keep your body running smoothly.

Overall, look at your schedule and see where you can strategically place a few healthy snack times to avoid the starvation mode. Most of my more fit friends recommend bananas, nuts, apples and oranges or tangerines to munch for afternoon snacks at work, ont he commute home, or when you finish a workout. Think in terms of a body that never runs out of fuel, or stalls out. That's where you want to be.
