3 Tips for Regaining Your Focus
By Genevieve Cunningham
We all have those days where it feels absolutely impossible to focus on the task at hand. Whatever it is that we’re doing, there is something else grabbing our attention. While a few of these days scattered here and there aren’t really anything to worry about, too many days filled with a lack of focus can be incredibly frustrating. If you’re ready to take back your concentration, check out these tips for losing the mental fog and getting that focus back on track.
Clean Your Space
Have you ever heard the expression messy desk, messy mind? Even if you thought this was just a fun way for your teacher to get you to clean out your desk, it actually holds some merit. When your space is cluttered or disorganized, it actually distracts your thoughts. It’s harder to concentrate in a space full of mess than it is in a clean, organized location. If you’re having a bit of trouble, check your surroundings. If need be, clean your space and then get back to your task.
Learn Some Breathing Techniques
Deep breathing techniques are often learned at therapy or through yoga or meditation practice. These techniques simply teach you how to take a deep breath from the diaphragm, hold, and release in a slow and deliberate manner. You’ll do a certain number of breaths in a row, and then reevaluate the way that you feel. This forces your breath and your heart rate to slow down, which directly affects the state of your mind. If you don’t already have a deep breathing pattern to fall back on, getting one ready may save your health later on.
Get Your Priorities in Check
Sometimes we can’t focus because we have too much to do! And in many cases, some of the things on our to-do list are a little less than important. A great way to get your mind back into focus is by eliminating nonessentials from your list. Work, family, bills … yes, these are definitely high on the list! Washing the car, making the perfect brownies for the bake sale, making the community get-together … these things can fall a little on the list.
Getting your focus back on track is sometimes a difficult task. But the good news is that it can be done! Use these tips to get you moving in the right direction, and to cultivate a concentration level like never before.
