Tips to Help You Meditate Like a Pro

By Genevieve Cunningham

It’s long been known that meditation is good for health. The benefits -- a calmer self, more stable moods, less illness -- have been proven over and over again. But even with the glaringly obvious benefits to this practice, most of us don’t give it a second thought. Why? It’s not mainstream in America, and for many, that means we have no idea how to begin! If you would like to jump in on this ancient practice with massive benefits, take a look at these tips to help you get started.

Relax

Meditation is all about relaxation, but too many people begin their practice completely stressed out. They think they have to get it just right. Or they think that they’re doing it wrong, and it stresses them out. You’re not doing it wrong. You’re OK. Relax, practice, and don’t worry about making sure everything is perfect. Meditation is about the practice, not about perfection.

Start Slow

There’s no use in trying to meditate for 20 minutes your first go. It won’t work. You’ll be frustrated and feel like a failure. Instead, meditate for two minutes. Tomorrow, try three. The slower you begin the practice, the more likely you are to succeed. In meditation, slow and steady truly wins the race.

Create a Space

It’s hard to meditate if you’re constantly distracted. If you can, create a space that is specific to meditation. This might be an extra bedroom, a study or library, or even a closet. If all else fails, just set a pillow in a clean corner. Creating a space not only reminds you to keep up the practice, but it makes it more likely that you’ll be able to relax and focus for a few minutes a day.

Schedule It

It’s easy to say that you’ll just meditate every morning, but unless you make it a priority, it won’t happen. Schedule it into your day. Set an alarm. Make it a priority just like work, exercise, and getting up at a certain time is a priority. Putting it in your schedule makes it more likely that you’ll actually complete it every day.

Meditation is really good for the body, mind, and soul. Most who engage in the practice on a  regular basis report incredible benefits and a feeling of self-satisfaction. Use these tips to get started, and you’ll probably notice a boost in your health and quality of life in no time at all.
