By Genevieve Cunningham
This time of year is exciting for everyone. Kids are excited for school. Parents are excited for their children. But perhaps one of the most exciting transitions of this time of year is the college student. Not only are they changing schools, but they're changing lives. While most of their new life is something to look forward to, there is one aspect that all new freshmen dread. The freshman 15. This infamous weight gain tends to jump on new college students, and once gained, it can be really hard to lose. Is there any way to avoid it? Of course! If you or your kids are headed back to school, whether it's Cal State Northridge or the Ivy Leagues, take a look at these ways to skip the freshman 15 and stay in good health this semester.
Stay Out of the Cafeteria
You won't be able to completely avoid the cafeteria. After all, you'll need to eat. But try to avoid hanging out or lounging in the cafeteria. The longer you're in there, the more tempted you'll be to nibble on something or grab a snack. Don't tempt yourself. Go to the cafeteria to eat your meal, and then get out of there until the next meal time.
Go to the Rec Center
It if you want to avoid weight gain, exercise will probably be a good idea. Exercise helps us burn calories and fat while also building muscle. Check out the rec center at your college. Chances are good that they'll have some great equipment, fun classes, and people who are also looking to stay fit. Getting to know and getting active in the rec center can be a great way to stay active, manage weight, and make some friends, too.
Find a Hobby That Makes You Move
There's a good chance that you'll be going from a fairly active teenager to a young adult with fewer activities. To avoid the dreaded weight gain, it's imperative that you find an active hobby to keep you involved and moving. Besides maintaining an exercise routine, you could join a campus sports team, get into cycling or hiking, or pick up any hobby that requires you to stay active. Movement is key, so get moving or encourage others to get moving -- whichever the case may be.
College is an exciting and transformative time of life. It's a great time for growth and personal development. But it's also a time when paying attention to health should be a big priority. Use these tips to avoid the dreaded freshman 15, stay in good shape, and enjoy your life in the next few years like never before.
