Aging and Activity: What You Really Need to Know

By Genevieve Cunningham

Aging can be a tough pill to swallow. It seems as though one day we wake up, and we're suddenly a lot older. We have wrinkles and dark spots. Our knees ache when the weather changes. We just feel -- worn out. It can feel hopeless. But there's good news -- aging can be softened with some common practices. One of the most beneficial and effective? Staying active! If you're interested in easing the transition into your older years, take a look at why you should stay active right now and for years to come.

The Problems With Aging

The body begins to slow down as we get older. We're more prone to injury. We're tired. We're more likely to experience pain. These factors play a huge role in the way that we feel and the overall state of our health. If we're in pain or we're exhausted, we're not going to be as active as we want to be. We're not going to stay moving even when we should. And these problems really sneak up on us. If you want to stay as youthful as possible, it's important to pay attention to these potential problems and take action before they begin.

The Benefits of Activity

Though a lot of people equate a lot of activity to weight loss, it brings a lot more to the table. Staying active means more mobility in general. It means less pain and stiffness in the joints. It means better endurance. It means a lowered risk of injury and pain. If we can eliminate these factors from our lives, suddenly staying active as we age becomes a lot easier. And the more active we remain, the younger and healthier we'll feel -- no matter how many candles are on the cake.

How to Stay Active

A lot of people stop being active because they think it's difficult, but it's actually really easy. Try taking walks every day. Try riding a bicycle. Maybe all you need to do is play with your children or grandchildren. Or maybe you want something more routine such as a yoga class or an aerobics routine. Just choose something that you enjoy and do it every day. Don't overthink it. Don't worry so much! Find something fun, do it, and staying active will be so much easier.

An active lifestyle is one of the best things to maintain as the years go by. It's better for our health -- both mental and physical -- and it's way more fun as well! Get active in your life and enjoy the many benefits that come with this life.
