For Better Flavor and Health, Try Foods of the Season
By Tom Herrin
Today’s world of fast foods and supermarkets has created its own particular way of life. Many people only recognize the foods they are accustomed to tasting. Many of those flavors are tainted in that they have been changed by their circumstances. Many foods that may be in demand are produced in somewhat artificial environments and shipped at times when they would not normally be available in a given area. Not that this is all bad, but a couple of things factor in here that can change the natural flavor. One is that they are created in surroundings that are not at all natural. The other is that they are picked early and destined to ripen in the process of shipping or storage. Eating foods of the season can be a pleasant change.
Flavor Can Be Surprisingly Better
When fruits ripen naturally, they are able to remain in their growing environment much longer. This allows full sun for the entire time. The natural elements are designed to provide the things that are needed for complete growth and ripening. The flavor tends to be fuller and the nutrients are more complete due to the process. For those who have not had the opportunity to experience it, there is nothing quite like the flavor of something that is picked from a tree fully ripe.
It Can Save Money
Purchasing fresh grown foods locally can mean that there is an ample supply. Local markets can be found filled with those seasonal foods at good prices. Seasonal production can provide an abundant supply. Supply and demand generally produces lower prices for those things that are in good supply. Having plenty now can mean better prices. People can eat their fill for less.
There Can Be Greater Connection With Basics
When people can buy foods in season, they will have more than enough. This lends itself to the opportunity for more grounding. People may find that they are able to enjoy more home cooked meals and more creativity in finding uses for those foods. Home cooking often opens the way for more communication as a family and more helping for the common cause. If you want something that has rich flavor and more nutrients, try buying and eating the foods of the season. The addition of better quality family time will be a fringe benefit that will make an even greater contribution. You may be surprised at how your life can be enhanced with such a small change.
