5 Ways Yoga Can Positively Affect Your Mind

By Alexis Mills

While many individuals do yoga mostly for its physical health benefits, it also brings many other benefits too. Researchers have explored the psychological benefits of yoga and it's rising in use in hospitals, rehab centers, and transitional homes in order to improve mental health, in addition to its impact on physical health.  It's been proven to decrease stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression. For aiding in these mental health-type issues, below are a few of the qualities that yoga cultivates.

Mindfulness

Yoga focuses on syncing up your movement with your breathing and giving your entire focus to these two attributes. This simplicity brings your mind into the present and acceptance of the moment you are in. This practice keeps you mindful and in tune with your body and your breath; practicing this on the mat will bring it to your daily life.

Self-Compassion

Being able to make a difference in your yoga performance and life takes a commitment of self-care and love. It encourages people to accept where they are and let go of judgment. It encourages you to love yourself in the moment no matter where you are in your process.

Insight

Yoga gives you the appreciation that you are constantly learning and growing and that there is nothing wrong with that. It provides the time to pause and set intentions for your practice that matches what you need in the moment. It gives the balance of being content with where you are, but also working on being the best version of yourself.

Resilience

Being a yogi forces you to let go of your ego and know that the best way to improve your practice is with patience, acceptance and letting go of comparison. It teaches to breathe through when the poses get difficult and that lesson spills over to our life as well.

Purpose

Yoga is a spiritual practice that makes us feel alive and can connect us to our truest self, bringing us purpose. The community of yoga is also a place where you can find support and a sense of belonging if you take classes or go to events. Next time you are in a yoga class, don't be afraid to make conversation with the person next to you.

If you find that you're stressed out, yoga might be a great way for you to relieve some of the burden that you are feeling.
