Quality Home Remedies for Strained Eyes

By Alexis Mills

If you are feeling that your eyes are sore or strained, it could be from lack of sleep, reading in a dim environment, staring at digital devices for long periods, exposure to bright light, allergies, or incorrect prescription glasses. The point is, the list is long for what can create irritation in the eyes and can create different types of damage to the eye. These behaviors can create eye irritation, blurry vision, pain, and increased sensitivity. If you are experiencing any of these there are many over-the-counter medications or drops that can help you. But before you go to the store, there are also many home remedies and changes you can make to help.

Home Remedies

Here are some home remedies and tips to deal with eye strain.

  • Minimize glare - This can come from windows, computer screens, and other reflective surfaces. Try to stay away as much as possible to help the eyes stay healthy.
  • Blink more often - Start blinking more to moisten the eyes and help prevent dryness.
  • Take screen breaks - Step away from your computer, TV, and phone screen frequently; doing so helps with blurry vision and gives your eyes a break from focusing and strain.
  • Stay hydrated - Drinking enough water keeps the eyes from getting dry which keeps them from straining or getting sore.
  • Apply milk - With a cotton ball, dip it into cold milk and apply it to your closed eyelid. This will help to sooth and relax the eye and sooth irritation and puffiness.
  • Sleep - Getting enough sleep gives your eyes the rest that they need to work properly throughout the day and ease soreness.
  • Warm compress - Do a warm compress of a clean towel soaked with warm water and apply it over your eyes. Once it gets cold, soak it in warm water again, and repeat. This helps to relax and sooth your eyes to release the strain and soreness.
  • Aloe vera - Put aloe vera on your strained eyelids and rinse it off after 10 minutes. Because of its soothing and cooling properties, it makes it suitable to ease eye strain.
  • Humidifiers - Using a humidifier in your house adds moisture to the air and reduces the risk of dry, irritated eyes.
  • Cold compress - Applying a cold compress of ice wrapped in a cloth can actually help the eyes just like a warm compress can. Leave the ice wrap on for a few minutes and it will ease swollen, sore eyes.
  • Turmeric - Wash your face with turmeric powder diluted in water. This has anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce any swelling to fight infection which causes the strain.
  • Rose water - Dab a cotton ball with chilled rose water on your eyes for 10 minutes. The rose water is effective to give a cool, relaxing sensation to the eye to help with eye soreness, strain, and irritation.

If you are dealing with feeling like your eyes are working overtime, try some of the above home remedies before trying over-the-counter medication. Realize that medication doesn't have to be your go-to when trying to fix an issue with your body.
