A Clean Home and Your Mental Health

By Rachel Shouse

Keeping a clean home is much easier said than done. It may not seem as important as it really is. Keeping a clean home can have a positive affect on your mental health and physical health. It can also improve the relationships in your home.

A Clean Home and Your Mental Health

Keeping your home clean can do more than make your home look pretty. Studies have shown that being able to relax in a clean home has a positive effect on people's moods and focus. Picture the difference between how you feel when you wake up to a clean kitchen versus a dirty one. You would have less stress immediately if that chore was done before bed. Keeping your house clean can also reduce depression and anxiety symptoms. Both of those conditions can be negatively impacted when you feel really overwhelmed. Imagine what a new cleaning routine could do for you mentally.

Your Physical Health and a Clean Home

While being up and about may not be what you really want to be doing, there are so many benefits to it. Cleaning isn't always super difficult, but some types of cleaning can feel somewhat like a workout. The biggest part of most workouts is accelerating your heart rate, which cleaning can do.

Decluttering and reorganizing can also provide some much needed physical activity. A lot of organizing can be done by simply sorting, but sometimes greater measures are required. If you feel like you could use a little boost in this area, look around your home and see what you would like to get done. You'll most likely find plenty to do.

A Clean Home and Improved Relationships

Life puts strain on a relationship without much help from other sources. One of those being a dirty home. Think about how your mornings operate. Do you spend a lot of time trying to find your clothes for the day or your children's? Do you have to worry about dishes before you can cook a meal?

There are ways to reduce these problems. Creating a routine is step No. 1. Routines aren't supposed to make you feel more stressed so be sure to keep it simple. Your priorities really matter here. The more time you take to care for them, the better your life will be.

A clean home isn't something everyone associates with their health. While a big part of that is to keep your home pretty and in proper shape, let your physical and mental health be a motivator here as well.
