3 Easy Ways to Cut Your Dinner Calories

By Genevieve Cunningham

When it comes to cutting calories, it seems as though dinner is the toughest part. While it’s fairly easy to cut back at breakfast and not too much trouble to slim your lunch down, dinner is another story. The last meal of the day, the one we often share with friends or family, is supposed to be comforting and filling and dense. Right? Unfortunately, if you’re serious about cutting back and losing weight, it’s dinner that needs the most structure. In order to get your dinner calories under control, take a look at these tips for cutting a few calories every night.

Drink Water

Don’t drink your calories. Instead of choosing soda or tea or coffee, just drink water. Ice it down if you need to, but skip the liquid calories at all costs. Drinking water hydrates the body, eases digestion, and it also fills you up. The more water that you drink with your meal, the less room there will be for food, and the fewer calories you’ll naturally consume.

Stick to Vegetable Sides

Side dishes come in all different forms. Sometimes we add bread, sometimes we add starches like potatoes and rice, and sometimes we add veggies. If you want to lower your caloric intake, stick to the veggies as much as possible. Choose green if it’s available (beans, peas, asparagus, broccoli, etc.), and if there aren’t any green vegetables available, choose the next best option. You might be surprised at how many fewer calories you consume based on this concept alone. Make it a habit, and you’ll definitely notice a difference over time.

Add a Salad

Salads are nutritionally dense, incredibly filling, and low calorie. If you can, add a salad to every dinner menu. This almost guarantees that your overall caloric value for that particular meal will be lower. The key is to keep the salad simple. If you add a ton of fruit and dressing and croutons, the salad will contain too many calories. Stick to the basics, and you’ll have a filling side with very few calories at all.

Cutting calories at dinner is both important and possible. Use these tips to get you started. With a little practice and patience, you’ll limit your dinner calories, improve your health, and possibly lose a little weight. A healthy dinner is a great start to a healthy diet, so get started today and enjoy the healthy benefits that come with it.
