Why Any Exercise is Better Than None
By Genevieve Cunningham
Exercise is a hot topic in the health and fitness world. Most people would agree that exercise is important. It's something that everyone should try to incorporate into their life on a regular basis. For many, this means signing up for the gym today. It means creating a schedule, joining a class or two, and breaking a serious sweat as often as possible. But what if you don't really have time for all that? What if all you have time for is a 10-minute walk? Many in this situation simply skip exercise altogether, thinking a 10-minute walk isn't enough to make an impact. But is that true? No! If your schedule is already filled to the brim, take a look at these reasons why even a little bit of exercise is better than none.
Any Movement Burns Calories
Even though we like to think that we exercise because it's the right thing to do or in order to build a strong body, the truth is that most of us do it to control our weight. And exercise can definitely help us do just that! While 10 minutes of exercise probably won't burn as many calories as an hour, it still burns more than sitting on the couch watching TV. If weight management is the game, then every little bit of exercise counts.
Any Movement Eases Stiffness
One of the best reasons to maintain an exercise routine, even if it's limited, is for the flexibility. Inactivity creates stiff and sore muscles and joints. And the more discomfort you feel in the body, the more likely you are to skip out on daily activities. Even small amounts of movement can ease stiffness and general discomfort in the body. Make the elimination of stiffness and the addition of flexibility your goals, and it won't take much to get the job done.
It's Really More About the Habit
The truth is that, though the exercise itself is important, it's the habit that really matters. Your life won't always be so busy. At some point, there will be a break in the clouds and you’ll have more time on your hands. If you stick with exercise through the busy time, your routine will already be intact when life slows down. You’ll be able to easily transition into longer workouts, and the benefits will grow. Keep the exercise going, and in time, you will certainly be glad that you did.
Exercise is a very important part of a healthy lifestyle. Even if you can only squeeze in 10 or 15 minutes of light movement, don't skip it! Get in whatever exercise you can, and you’ll still gain many of the benefits, albeit in smaller doses. Movement matters, so squeeze it into your schedule and you won't be sorry.
