4 Reasons Why You Need Fitness Friends
By Genevieve Cunningham
We all need friends. In fact, our peer group is one of the most influential that we'll have in our entire lifetime. We really lean on others when given the chance, and truly, that's really good for us! But sometimes we need different friends for different things. Sometimes we have multiple friend groups, depending on what we're doing. If you're getting into fitness, you may be coming to realize that this is an area where you definitely need friends. Take a look at these four reasons why fitness friends are both necessary and incredibly beneficial in your quest for better health.
For Motivation
Trying to go the fitness route all alone is hard. Really hard. If you're accustomed to working out already, then you may be OK with going it alone. But for most people, a little support goes a long way. If you have friends telling you that you can do it, that you can make that last minute or last set, then it gives you a little push of motivation. And a little outside motivation may be enough to keep us going when it's hard.
For Accountability
Beyond motivation, friends can also hold us accountable. If you haven't been to the gym for a few days, you have someone who can ask you if you're OK and where you've been. Until you have someone do this, you may not actually understand how valuable it is. If you're one who needs a little help with accountability, having a good group of fitness friends may be just what you need.
For Ideas
Fitness minded friends also care about fitness. If you're stuck or bored, they may be able to give you some new ideas or tips to get you back on track. They may also have advice for working through a particular problem. Sometimes we just need friends who are thinking about the same thing. If you need to add a little freshness to your routine, fitness friends are the way to go.
For Lifestyle
It's easier to maintain a particular lifestyle if other people you know are doing it too. And this is especially true for fitness. You need friends who will also order the salad. You need friends who encourage you to go to bed on time. If you're serious about good health, you have to live it, and this is easier if your friends -- or at least some of them -- are living it too.
If you are just getting into the fitness world, it can be so incredibly beneficial to make some friends at the gym. This may be indescribably valuable down the line. Make some friends, be a support for them, and you may create the perfect scenario for living a healthy life from here on out.
