How to Release Stress Before Bed

By Genevieve Cunningham

Stress is such a burden. We all have to deal with it, but we're all constantly looking for ways to make it go away. Unfortunately, there's little we can do to make stress disappear from our lives. Instead, we have to learn to manage it and keep it at controllable levels. One great way to do this is to release that stress before crawling into bed at night. This allows for a better night's sleep and starts your day off fresh and stress-free as well. If you need help with nighttime stress relief, take a look at these tips to try tonight.

Stretch Deeply

When we're stressed, we hold it in our bodies. It might feel like pain or simply like tension or tight muscles. The good news is that if we physically release that tension, the stress goes with it. Before you go to bed, stretch deeply, and make sure to include the hips and legs -- that's where we store a lot of tension. If you can, try some yoga, as the instructors are knowledgeable and can guide you through the most release. Give this a try, and it may be enough to help you sleep stress-free.

Hot Shower

A hot shower is a quick and easy way to release stress. The hot water, when we allow it to run down our muscles, helps release the same tension that is released through stretching. If you have access to a sauna, use that. But if not, just steam up the bathroom, enjoy the hot water, and allow the tension, thoughts, and worries to melt away before bed.

Run

Running is hard. It challenges the entire body -- and that's exactly why it's good for releasing stress. Once you start running, your mind begins to focus on the stress of the run. It can't worry about your day and your run at the same time. The longer you run, the more of this effect you'll feel. If you like running, lace up your shoes at the end of the day and literally race the worries away.

Don't let yourself go to bed with stress. Though it can't all be avoided, there are definitely things that you can do to lower the amount of stress you feel and improve the quality of sleep. Use these tips to get started, and you may find better sleep and better health in no time at all.
